Senior Preschool Program
The Barrhaven Child Care Centre is located at 56 Kennevale Drive and is open Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. We operate in compliance with:
1.  The Day Nurseries Act (of the Ministry of Education (MEDU))
2.  All applicable Health and Fire Regulations. We are licensed to accommodate children
Our Junior Toddler Program is for children 18-24 months. This program can enroll three children between the ages of 15-17 months. There is space for 15 children in this program with a 1:5 teacher to child ratio.
While all children develop in similar ways, each child is unique and developmental milestones are reached at different rates. All aspects of development are stimulated throughout the day along with nurturing Educators, consistency, security, and trust. Music is a very important aspect of our program. Toddlers love to sing, especially when a song has lots of actions and repetition.

15 months through 10 years of age.
Our Junior Preschool Program is for children 2.5 – 3.5 years of age. There is space for 16 children in this program with a 1:8 teacher to child ratio.

Junior Preschool is an age where children are hitting many milestones in all areas of their development.
Language, social, gross motor and self help. The Junior Preschool Program is a place where all this new and exciting learning is enhanced through the environment. The Educators work in a team approach to ensure the children are expanding on their learning and development.  By providing planned and spontaneous activities and by also creating an environment that is supportive in furthering children’s self exploration and learning.
Our Senior Preschool Program is for children 3.5 - 5 years of age. There is space for 24 children in this program with a 1:8 teacher to child ratio.  There are three Educators in the Program.

Children are enrolled in our Senior Preschool typically the year before they will be going off to Kindergarten.

Our Senior Preschool Program helps children prepare for Kindergarten.
The learning environment is play based and set up based on the observations based on the interest of the children. The program helps children expand on their socialization skills with their peers by incorporating more opportunities for group interactions through interactive circle times, show and tell and having the learning centre’s in the room set up for small groups of children. Self help skills are also supported through providing many opportunities for choices in the classroom as well as encouraging dressing for outdoor time. The Senior Preschool Program is the steppingstone to Kindergarten.

Extended Day, Kindergarten & School  Age Programs
We provide a Junior and Senior Kindergarten Program for children who are attend Junior and Senior Kindergarten at Mary Honeywell ES. There is space for 26 children in each program with a 1:13 teacher to child ratio. There are two educators per program.

Reading/Quiet Area

Young children love to have books and stories read to them. We know that reading to children benefits them emotionally and contributes to their language development.

Cognitive Area

The Cognitive Area provides a wide range of games, puzzles and other cognitive toys.

Dramatic Play

The Dramatic Play Area is the social area of our room. It allows children to re-create the social roles they see in their everyday lives. The set-up of this area is designed to encourage children to try out role-playing as well as use their imagination.

Block Area

This is an area that provides children with interesting construction materials for designing and building.

Discovery/Science

The discovery/science area sharpens the children’s observations of the world around them. This is done through science experiments, games, books and hands on science equipment

Sensory Area

This is an area that provides many learning opportunities for children. The sensory area consists of sand and water tables. This area is utilized to promote the children’s development by “learning through their senses.”

Art Area

This is an area established in the room to allow for individual expression and creativity.

Music and Movement

Music is an important component of the programs. Music is everywhere and anywhere in the program environment.

There are 5 School age rooms in total. Three of the Programs accommodate 30 children with two Educators. Two of the Programs accommodate 15 children with one Educator per program.

Barrhaven Child Care Centre offers the Extended Day Program for families whose children attend Mary Honeywell ES. We are Third Party Operators, which offers this program on behalf of the Ottawa Carleton District School Board. The Extended Day Program provides your children with the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities before and after their school day. Some of the activities will include outdoor time, gym time, planned group activities as well as free choice activities. Our program provides children with a seamless transition from their school day to the Extended Day Program. It is also convenient for families as it limits the number of transitions children will have within their day.
Two of our School Age Programs that we provide are specifically designed for the older School Age children. These two programs are in the Child Care Centre and are delivered in an “After School Club” format.

We understand that as children get older, they start to need a different experience with the Extended Day Program. Developmentally the children need to have a more “mature” environment. Our goal with the School Age Club is to endeavour to provide that type of environment for the children.
The rooms that we have secured for this program is a permanent space that will be designed to allow the children to have input into the environment as well as the types of activities that will take place.  Having a permanent space for the children will allow them to have ongoing, long term activities that they can work on over multiple days/weeks. It will provide an environment that helps foster some of the milestones that older children experience, such as independence and more in-depth decision-making skills.
The Extended Day Program will operate on all regular school days as follows:

7:00-8:15 and 3:00-6:00
